SMILE FOR THE CAMERA

POSTED:
the story of the Selfie

A selfie is “a photo of yourself that you take, typically with a smartphone or webcam.” Fix your hair, find your light, and hit publish. World Selfie Day is June 21. There is no better time to find the right angle, try that new filter, and spruce up your social feed. Are you feeling good? Perhaps you've put on that new favorite outfit? Or maybe you're just bored? It doesn't matter. Grab your awesome refurbished iPhone, and let's get that selfie – because you're that cool!

That said, if you’re here, you’re probably wondering where it all began – and boy do we have a treat for you because when you think you know, you had nooooo idea!

Let's get started because this train is going back in time and in style. Hop on!

Where did it all start?

The year is 1839. Robert Cornelius, an amateur chemist and, what some might argue, a photography enthusiast in Philly, was the first person to ever take a “self-portrait" (now dubbed ‘a selfie’). So, Cornelius took a picture at the back of his family's chandelier shop. He set up his camera and then ran into the frame for the photo – hence the first-ever "selfie."

During that very same year, a French photographer who went by the name Hippolyte Bayard was looking for a way to take photos. Eventually, he came up with a genius photographic process similar to Polaroid (if you’re not familiar with the term, YouTuber Marques Brownlee explains it in this fantastic video).

So, to do this, Bayard conducted a ton of tests while taking photographs of himself in the process. This suggests he was taking selfies (or, as we've said before, self-portraits) even before (precisely six months) Robert Cornelius.

Unfortunately, his method was never recognized by the Académie française, which, while admiring his talent, had already invested too much in Daguerre to be able to focus elsewhere, thereby turning a blind eye to Bayard's three years of experimentation.

Selfie in the mirror

The mirror selfie fad predates Skyblog and Instagram – despite what you might have heard. In 1910, Australian photographer Harold Cazneaux was using a mirror to take his own selfies. Many artists would then follow suit and capture their own reflections in shop windows, mirrors, with their friends, and so on.

The first selfie – hammered

During the Gemini 12 mission in 1966, astronaut Buzz Aldrin (did you think Buzz Lightyear, too?) took a selfie of himself, making it the first selfie to be taken in space ever. Check out his tweet – isn’t it jaw-dropping?

However, it wasn’t until 2002 that an inebriated young Australian guy used the term to comment on a selfie describing an injury he had gotten during a “wild” evening. The term exploded on Myspace before spreading to other social networks…

Fast forward to the age of smartphones and the amazing iPhone. In 2013, the selfie got its official place in the Oxford dictionary, with term usage increasing by over 17,000% since then. The convenience of smartphone photo-snapping spurred a surge in selfies, triggering a trend that literally flipped the visual script.

That very same year, DJ Rick McNeely began celebrating June 21 as “National Selfie Day.” Yet, the iPhone 4 (If you miss Steve Jobs presenting, here he is introducing the iPhone 4 for the first time.) popularized the selfie a few years before. And, honestly, guys, after a decade of selfies, we now have a solid appreciation for the all-incredible front-facing camera we can get with a refurbished iPhone selfie. There's just no doubt about it.

With the advance of ever-cheaper international travel and the popularity of visual platforms like Instagram, the refurbished iPhone selfie has grown stronger and more global. After all, the platform is what gave birth to the first hashtag-based selfie trends, such as #DuckFace and "IWokeUpLikeThis.

How far has the refurbished iPhone Selfie camera come?

Serious photographers will like the 12-megapixel camera and better low-light performance of the latest high-end refurbished iPhone 13 and refurbished iPhone 13 Pro.

With the new cameras on the iPhone 13 Pro, now is a terrific time to be a professional photographer looking to get the most out of a camera that fits in your pocket. And then, use your refurbished iPhone selfie camera to vlog about it or simply share an awesome story.

No matter the case, Apple’s newest smartphone, which features a 12-megapixel camera, improves image quality significantly. Four front camera specifications of the refurbished iPhone 13 and Pro Max stand out:

- 3X Optical zoom in, 2X zoom out; 6X optical zoom range

- Sensor-shift optical image stabilization

- Nightmode

- Apple ProRAW

One of the most obvious ways to see changes in the current refurbished iPhone is the ability to take amazing selfies. Processor speeds and display quality may not be as obvious from year to year, but the progress that a refurbished iPhone 13 selfie camera and rear cameras make is simply hard to miss.
